Meet the team

LIZBETH

The idea of creating another world for audiences is what Lizbeth loves about being a scenic designer! As a 4th year at UNCSA, Lizbeth can't wait to continue to impact peoples lives through her designs.

MAX

Max is a 4th year Lighting designer student at UNCSA. He loves showing people the beauty that light can have, no matter the surface or room.

KATE

Kate is a 3rd year grad student in the Sound Design program at UNCSA. She loves the creativity that comes from sound. She is always looking for ways

to use unexpected things to tell a story.

Combining Ideas

Not really knowing each other at the beginning of this class we all came together for our first design meeting of what we wanted our installation to be. Each of us brought our 3 ideas of what could result in an interesting exhibit for an audience to experience. Below are those 9 original ideas.

Hunger Games

The possibility of entering a world similar to the one in Hunger Games where it will be a combination of an escape room and laser tag. You would have the weapon of your choice and have a certain time limit to try and be the last one standing. This environment brings lots of its own challenges apart from the other audience members trying to eliminate you. The game should be intense, meant to submerge the audience/players into this world as if it were their new reality. Meant to make the audience feel like they truly have to do whatever it takes to survive.

The Maze Runner

Arriving in a cage, the audience is deposited in the middle of a maze that leads to many different pathways. The task would be to make it out before their time runs out. Once that time runs out and they are stuck inside they have to survive within the walls of the maze as they shift and bring out more obstacles, the task then becomes surviving the maze for the time that remains and trying to find the alternative exit.

Interactive Sound Lab

At the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, they have an exhibit called the sound lab that includes jam spaces, recording booths, and DJ equipment. My favorite part of it is the interactive effects setups to learn more about how musicians and engineers create certain sounds and effects. I've always loved taking effects pedals and processors and squeezing the strangest sounds out of them like taking a delay processor and making it sound like a motorcycle. It made me feel like the pioneers of early synthesizers and recording techniques like Robert Moog and Joe Meek. It would be amazing to give the opportunity of creating new and unique sounds to others.

German Expressionist Cinema

German Expressionist Cinema of the 1920s offered some of the most amazing and strange art ever seen in theaters. Taking a film or director of this time period and genre and bringing it to life would be breathtaking and terrifying. Whether it's the abstract scenery of Dr. Caligari or the terrifying imagery and costuming of Faust, to experience this world and movement beyond the big screen would be unforgettable.

Early Conversations

Our very first conversation led to an interesting discovery. We all felt that we needed to create something that would benefit the community we live in. So, after looking at all of our initial ideas we decided to create an immersive experience that discussed states of mind and had some sort of escape room element.

Next Steps

The next steps for our group was to research the 4 states of mind that we had agreed upon. Depression, anxiety, rage, and hope. We focused on images and music that conveyed what those 4 states of mind would sound like or look like. We knew that our main challenge moving forward would be making a space represent a state of mind without labelling it as such. Below are the songs and images that inspired what is now called "Mindscapes."
